Walami Trail is the eastern portion of the Batongguan Historic Trail. It was a path forged during the period of Japanese colonial rule to connect the eastern part of Taiwan to the west, ending at Dongpu in Nantou County. It is said that the word ‘Walami’ originates from the Bunun word ‘Maravi’, meaning fern. These ferns are found growing luxuriantly along the paths and throughout the trail, hence during the period of Japanese rule, ‘Walami’ became the name of the trail.

This area, part of the wider Yushan National Park, is abundant with natural resources, wild animals and flora. Apart from the chance to encounter wild animals such as Taiwanese macaques and weasels, you can also revel in knowing that the Walami area was once a place of residence for the Bunun tribe. During the Japanese rule, residences and guest houses were also built here for the use of the Japanese police. Even though the houses have long been destroyed, during the walk you can still spot some of the ruins. Every year in April and May is the time to enjoy the blooming of tung-oil tree flowers and to see fireflies in the dark. If you have the chance to come to Yuli, it’s not to be missed.
