Antong Traversing Trail
Antong Traversing Trail is the first ancient road in history that crosses the Coastal Mountain Range. To this day it retains its natural mountain forest ecology, with a vista of the sky blending with the sea. This is an ancient road not only with beautiful landscapes, but also with ecological, cultural and historical significance.
In the past, this ancient road was a path that connected people from the Amis tribe living on both sides of the Central Mountain Range, enabling them to marry people from different villages or to get together to celebrate festivals. It was also a road that Christian missionaries would take. It was built during Japanese colonial rule and was named the ‘Red Straw Mountain Road’. During the Pacific War between Japan and the US from 1941-1945, residents used this road for smuggling fish, tobacco and other goods. This ancient road has a natural and primitive ecological environment. The wooden boardwalk slowly climbs among the verdant forests and it is a leisurely and comfortable hike. The clouds and mists in the mountains waft around you, like a paradise in a dream. In the pavilion, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Huadong Valley and when it is sunny and cloudless, you can see Yushan. The viewing platform allows you stunning panoramic views; the blues of the sea and the sky over the Pacific Ocean merging into one is breathtaking.
